This Salifert Calcium (Ca) Test Kit is designed for accurate measurement of calcium levels in marine and reef aquariums. Maintaining stable calcium levels, typically between 400-450 ppm, is crucial for the health and growth of stony corals, calcareous algae, and other reef inhabitants. Fluctuations of more than approximately 15 mg/L can negatively impact these organisms.

This titration-style test kit provides results with a resolution of 5 mg/L and an accuracy of approximately 10 mg/L, allowing for precise monitoring of calcium concentrations. It is capable of performing between 50 to 100 tests per kit, depending on the calcium levels in your aquarium water.

How to Use the Salifert Calcium Test Kit

Follow these steps for accurate results:

• Fill the provided test vial with 2 mL of aquarium water. For more tests from a single kit, you can use 1 mL of water.
• Add one level scoop of Ca-1 reagent to the water sample.
• Using the 1 mL syringe and the plastic tip, draw 1 mL of Ca-2 reagent. Add 0.6 mL of Ca-2 reagent to the sample vial at once and swirl gently for about 5 seconds. The mixture should turn pink.
• Continue adding the Ca-2 reagent drop by drop to the vial, swirling gently after each drop, until the color changes from pink to blue. A final color change to purple may occur, requiring one or two more drops to achieve a stable blue.
• Read the amount of Ca-2 reagent used from the syringe. Consult the included reading table to determine your aquarium’s calcium concentration. If you used 1 mL of water for testing, multiply the result by two.

Important Considerations

• Stability: Aim to maintain a stable calcium level, avoiding large fluctuations.
• Reagent Handling: Ca-2 reagent contains sodium hydroxide and can be irritating. Handle with care and rinse immediately if contact with skin or eyes occurs.
• Mixing: Gently swirl the test vial after each reagent addition. Avoid aggressive or continuous stirring, as this can affect the endpoint stability.
• Natural Seawater: Natural seawater typically contains 400-450 mg/L of calcium.
