Seachem Prime is a highly concentrated and comprehensive water conditioner essential for any aquarium owner. Beyond just dechlorinating, Prime also detoxifies toxic ammonia and nitrite, converting them into a safe form that your aquarium’s biological filter can process more easily. This makes it invaluable when setting up a new aquarium, performing water changes, or dealing with emergencies like filter failure or overcrowding. Prime also binds heavy metals, is non-acidic and will not impact pH, and importantly for reef keepers, it will not over-activate protein skimmers.

How to Use Seachem Prime:

• The standard dosage for Seachem Prime is 1 capful (5 mL) for every 200 L (50 US gallons) of new water. For smaller volumes, each thread on the cap is approximately 1 mL. It is best to add Prime to new water before it enters the aquarium, but it can be added directly to the tank if necessary.
• Water Changes: Add Prime to the new water as you add it to the tank to neutralize chlorine and chloramine.
• Tank Cycling: Use during the initial setup of a new aquarium to protect beneficial bacteria and fish from ammonia and nitrite toxicity.
• Emergencies: In cases of ammonia or nitrite spikes, up to a 5x dose can be safely used to temporarily detoxify these compounds for up to 48 hours. Re-dose every 24-48 hours if ammonia or nitrite levels remain elevated.
• High Chloramine: For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, a double dose may be used safely.
• Warm Water: If the water temperature is above 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose.

A sulfur odor is normal and indicates the product is working. Prime does not permanently remove ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate; it detoxifies them for approximately 48 hours, allowing the biological filter to process them.
