Enhanced Biological Filtration

Seachem Matrix is a porous inorganic solid with a high surface area, measuring approximately 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrix provides over 700 m² of surface area, which is significantly more than most other biological filter media. This vast surface area is ideal for the colonization of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, which are essential for breaking down harmful ammonia and nitrite into less toxic nitrate. Unlike some other biomedia, Matrix’s unique structure supports both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, allowing it to remove nitrate simultaneously with ammonia and nitrite within the same filter.

Versatile Application

Matrix is completely inert, meaning it will not break down or affect water parameters, making it safe for all freshwater and saltwater inhabitants. Due to its internal pore structure, Matrix can be rinsed when needed to remove detritus without disturbing the beneficial bacteria colonies. It is suitable for use in all types of filters, including canister filters, sump filters, and media reactors. Seachem recommends using 250 ml of Matrix per 50 US gallons (200 liters) of aquarium water.
