Vibrant Zoanthids: Add a Splash of Color to Your Aquarium
Discover the dazzling beauty of Zoanthids, a beginner-friendly coral that brings an explosion of color and life to any marine aquarium.
Overview
Zoanthids, often called “Zoas” or “Button Polyps,” are colonial marine invertebrates renowned for their stunning array of colors and intricate patterns. These soft corals form mats or encrusting colonies, spreading across rockwork like a living carpet. Each individual polyp typically has a small, button-like body with two rows of delicate tentacles surrounding its oral disc. Their vibrant appearance makes them a popular choice for creating “zoa gardens,” showcasing a diverse collection of morphs in one area. Zoanthids are photosynthetic, meaning they derive energy from light, but they also benefit from supplemental feeding.
Care Level
Zoanthids are celebrated for their hardiness and adaptability, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. While generally peaceful and non-aggressive towards other corals, their rapid growth can sometimes lead them to overgrow neighboring inhabitants if not managed. Some species of Palythoa, a closely related coral often grouped with Zoanthids, can contain palytoxin, necessitating careful handling.
Tank Essentials
These corals thrive in stable marine aquarium conditions. Maintain a water temperature between 75-80°F (24-27°C) with a salinity of 1.025-1.026 specific gravity. A pH level of 8.1-8.4 is ideal. Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to keep their polyps clean without causing stress, and they do well in low to moderate lighting (75-250 PAR), gradually acclimating them to higher intensities. Target nitrates between 1-10 ppm and phosphates under 0.05 ppm for optimal health.
Diet
While Zoanthids are photosynthetic, they benefit greatly from regular feeding. Supplement their diet with small, nutrient-rich foods like phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialized coral foods to encourage robust growth and vibrant coloration.
