Overview

The Green Pavona (*Pavona explanulata*) is a striking stony coral known for its diverse growth forms, often appearing as encrusting mats, plating structures, or irregular leafy blades. Its surface is covered in tiny polyps, giving it a textured, “fuzzy” appearance. This species is highly adaptable and can display shades of green, brown, or even purple, often with fluorescent qualities under blue light. It is native to the shallow reefs and lagoons of the Indo-Pacific region.

Care Level

Beginner to Intermediate. While generally considered hardy among Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals, the Green Pavona requires stable water parameters. It is more forgiving of minor fluctuations than some other SPS corals but still demands consistency for optimal health and growth.

Tank Essentials

A minimum aquarium size of 200 litres (approx. 55 gallons) is recommended. Maintain stable water parameters: a pH of 8.1–8.4, salinity of 1.024–1.026, alkalinity of 8–9 dKH, calcium of 400–440 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm. Provide moderate to strong, indirect water flow to prevent detritus buildup and encourage polyp extension. Lighting should be moderate to high, with a PAR range of 75-250.

Diet

The Green Pavona is primarily photosynthetic, relying on its symbiotic zooxanthellae for most nutrition. However, occasional target feeding with fine coral foods like phytoplankton or zooplankton can enhance growth and coloration.
