Vibrant Purple Sarcothelia Coral for Your Aquarium
Add a striking splash of colour and dynamic movement to your marine display with the captivating Sarcothelia “Purple” soft coral.
Overview
The Sarcothelia coral, often referred to as “Blue Clove Polyps,” typically displays enchanting hues ranging from light blue to purplish-brown, making the purple variant a particularly sought-after addition to reef aquariums. These soft corals belong to the Xeniidae family and are characterized by their fleshy, nipple-like polyps that sway gracefully with the water flow. Sarcothelia edmondsoni, a known species, naturally occurs in Hawaiian waters and is noted for its ability to form dense growths. Its unique morphology and vibrant colours add significant visual appeal to any aquascape.
Care Level
Beginner to intermediate. While Sarcothelia corals are generally hardy, they are known for their rapid growth and potential to become invasive, outcompeting other corals if not managed. Careful placement and monitoring are essential for compatibility.
Tank Essentials
A minimum aquarium size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended. Maintain stable water parameters with a salinity of 1.023-1.025, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a temperature of 24-26°C (75-79°F). Moderate to high water flow and moderate to high lighting are ideal.
Diet
Sarcothelia corals are photosynthetic, deriving much of their nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae. Supplementation with phytoplankton and other small, liquid or powdered coral foods is beneficial for optimal health and growth.
