Graceful Sea Fans: Introducing the Gorgonia Coral
Add a touch of the ocean’s elegance to your aquarium with the captivating Gorgonia coral, a branching wonder that sways with the currents.
Overview
Gorgonia corals, commonly known as sea fans or sea whips, are striking branching soft corals renowned for their intricate, fan-like or whip-like structures. They come in a variety of vibrant colors, including purple, red, orange, tan, and yellow. Polyps extend along their branches, filtering food particles from the water column. While some species are photosynthetic, many require direct feeding, making them a rewarding challenge for experienced aquarists. They add vertical structure and graceful movement to any reef tank.
Care Level
Care level varies significantly depending on whether the Gorgonian is photosynthetic or non-photosynthetic. Photosynthetic types are generally easier and suitable for intermediate keepers, while non-photosynthetic species are considered “expert only” due to their demanding feeding requirements.
Tank Essentials
Gorgonians thrive in tanks with strong, turbulent flow to prevent algae buildup and aid feeding. Temperatures should be maintained between 72–80°F (22–27°C), with a pH of 8.1–8.4 and salinity of 1.024–1.026. Photosynthetic types prefer moderate to high lighting, while non-photosynthetic varieties do best in lower light conditions.
Diet
Photosynthetic Gorgonians benefit from occasional phytoplankton, while non-photosynthetic types require frequent feedings of fine particulate foods like phytoplankton, marine snow, or specialized coral diets. Feeding should occur 1-2 times per week for photosynthetic types and 3-5 times per week for non-photosynthetic types.
