Description
Goldtip Starfish: A Stunning Reef Aquarium Addition
Discover the captivating Nardoa novaecaledoniae, a reef-safe starfish known for its vibrant coloration and fascinating natural behaviour.
Overview
The Goldtip Starfish, or Nardoa novaecaledoniae, is a striking invertebrate native to the Indo-Pacific region. Characterized by its chunky arms, often in shades of tan or brown, with distinctive golden or peach-colored tips, this sea star adds a unique touch to a mature reef aquarium. They are slow-moving scavengers, grazing on detritus and biofilm found on live rock and substrate.
Care Level
Intermediate. The Goldtip Starfish requires a stable, mature reef aquarium and is sensitive to changes in water parameters. They are generally peaceful but can opportunistically consume small sessile invertebrates if underfed.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 300 litres (75 gallons) is recommended for this species. Maintain stable salinity (1.023-1.026), a pH of 8.1-8.4, and temperatures between 24-28°C (75-82°F). Pristine water quality with zero ammonia and nitrites is crucial.
Diet
Omnivorous scavengers, they primarily feed on detritus, biofilm, and algae. Supplement their diet with small pieces of meaty foods such as shrimp, clam, or fish, and specialized starfish diets.
