Sun Nerite Snail: Your Aquarium’s Natural Algae Cleaner

Add vibrant patterns and unparalleled algae control to your freshwater aquarium with the fascinating Sun Nerite Snail. These peaceful invertebrates are diligent tank cleaners!

Overview

The Sun Nerite Snail (a variant within the *Neritina sp.* group) boasts a captivating shell, often displaying golden or yellowish bands on a darker background, sometimes with delicate thorny protrusions. Their unique patterns make each snail a living piece of art for your tank. Known for their incessant grazing, these industrious snails tirelessly patrol all aquarium surfaces, from glass to plants and decorations, making them highly effective algae eaters. They are generally nocturnal but remain active scavengers, contributing to a sparkling clean environment.

Care Level

Sun Nerite Snails are considered easy to care for, making them suitable for beginners. Their peaceful temperament ensures they are excellent tankmates for most community fish, dwarf shrimp, and other snails. Unlike many freshwater snails, they require brackish water to reproduce, meaning they will not overpopulate your aquarium. Ensure stable water parameters and avoid copper-based medications, as snails are highly sensitive to them.

Tank Essentials

A minimum tank size of 15 litres is recommended for a single Sun Nerite Snail, with additional space for more. They thrive in a wide range of freshwater conditions. Maintain a pH range of 6.5-8.0 and a temperature between 18-29°C. Provide plenty of hard surfaces like rocks, driftwood, and live plants for them to graze upon. A secure lid is advisable as they are known to climb above the waterline.

Diet

Primarily herbivorous, Sun Nerite Snails are renowned for their voracious appetite for various types of algae, including stubborn green spot algae and diatoms. If natural algae growth is insufficient, supplement their diet with high-quality algae wafers and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. Ensure a calcium source is available for healthy shell growth.
