Long Spine Urchin: An Algae-Grazing Powerhouse for Your Reef
Add a striking and beneficial clean-up crew member to your marine aquarium. The Long Spine Urchin is an excellent algae grazer, helping maintain a pristine environment.
Overview
The Long Spine Urchin (*Diadema setosum*) is a visually distinctive invertebrate, recognized by its long, slender, jet-black spines that radiate from a compact, near-spherical body. It often features a bright orange ring around its anal cone and five characteristic white or bluish dots. Primarily nocturnal, this urchin actively grazes on algae across your rockwork and substrate, efficiently controlling unwanted growth. When threatened, it can rapidly reorient its spines as a defense mechanism.
Care Level
Considered an easy to average care species, the Long Spine Urchin is generally peaceful, making it suitable for most reef or fish-only aquariums. While they are great for controlling algae, ensure your aquarium is mature and parameters are stable, as they are sensitive to fluctuating water quality. Exercise caution in reef tanks as they can occasionally dislodge unsecured corals.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide ample grazing surface and room for movement. Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature range of 23-27°C and a pH of 8.1-8.4. Provide plenty of live rock with crevices, as they appreciate hiding spots during the day.
Diet
As a prolific herbivore, the Long Spine Urchin primarily feeds on various types of algae, including filamentous and hair algae, from rockwork, glass, and substrate. Supplement their diet with dried seaweed or algae pellets if natural algae are insufficient.
