Fire Urchin: A Radiant Star for Your Reef Aquarium
Add a captivating splash of colour and a diligent algae-grazer to your marine tank with the striking Fire Urchin. Its vibrant hues and unique form make it a true underwater spectacle.
Overview
The Fire Urchin (*Astropyga radiata*) is a large and visually stunning sea urchin, boasting a test diameter of up to 20 cm. Its body can display a range of colours from reddish-brown to deep purple or nearly black, accented by iridescent blue spots in distinctive V-shaped patterns. Long, hollow spines, up to 4 cm, are constantly in motion. Primarily nocturnal, this echinoderm actively patrols your substrate, adding dynamic life to your aquarium.
Care Level
Considered an easy to moderate care level species, the Fire Urchin is peaceful but requires careful handling due to its venomous spines; a sting is comparable to a bee sting. It is reef compatible with caution, as it may dislodge unsecured rockwork and could nip at corals if insufficient food is available.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 208 litres is recommended for the Fire Urchin to thrive. Your aquarium must be well-established with stable water parameters. Provide ample, sturdy live rock for grazing surfaces and hiding spots, ensuring all rockwork is secure as this urchin can move it. Not suitable for acrylic tanks due to potential scratching.
Diet
The Fire Urchin is an omnivore, primarily grazing on nuisance algae such as green hair and filamentous varieties. Supplement its diet with dried seaweed, nori, and occasional meaty foods like krill or small pieces of raw shrimp to ensure it receives comprehensive nutrition.
