The common name for *Amphiprion percula* is “Percula Clownfish” or “Orange Clownfish.” It is often confused with *Amphiprion ocellaris* (Ocellaris Clownfish or False Percula Clownfish) but can be distinguished by having 10 dorsal fin spines (rarely 9) compared to *A. ocellaris*’s 11 (rarely 10), and typically thicker black outlines on its white bands.
**Appearance & Behaviour:** The Percula Clownfish has a bright orange body with three vertical white bands, each outlined in black. The anterior bar is behind the eye, the middle bar is across the mid-body, and the posterior bar is near the caudal fin. Females are generally larger than males, reaching up to 11 cm, while males are typically around 8 cm. This species exhibits protandry, meaning all individuals are born male and the dominant individual in a group will become female if the resident female dies. The next largest male then becomes the breeding male. They are known for their symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, using them for shelter and protection from predators. In captivity, captive-bred individuals may not require a host anemone. They generally live in small, size-hierarchical groups consisting of a breeding pair and non-breeding males.
**Care Level:** Percula Clownfish are considered easy to care for and are a good choice for marine aquarium beginners. They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially when hosting an anemone or eggs. They can be kept as a single specimen, a mated pair, or in larger tanks, a small group, though aggression towards other clownfish in smaller tanks can occur. Compatibility with other peaceful, similarly sized fish is generally good.
**Tank Essentials:** A minimum tank size of 75-100 litres (20-26 gallons) is recommended. However, if a host anemone is provided, a larger tank of 190 litres (50 gallons) or more is suggested. Optimal water parameters include a pH range of 8.0-8.5 and a temperature range of 23-28°C (74-82°F). Specific gravity should be between 1.020-1.026. They thrive in a mature reef or fish-only aquarium with live rock providing hiding places.
**Diet:** Percula Clownfish are omnivores with a carnivorous tendency. In the wild, they feed on zooplankton (like copepods and larval tunicates), small crustaceans, and some algae. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, pellets, and frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped squid, fish flesh, or clam. They should be fed once or twice daily.
