Rummy Nose Tetra: The Iconic Shoaler for Your Aquarium

Bring vibrant schooling energy to your freshwater tank with the captivating Rummy Nose Tetra. Their distinctive red faces and active shoaling make them a true centerpiece.

Overview

The Rummy Nose Tetra (*Hemigrammus rhodostomus*) is celebrated for its striking, brilliant red nose that contrasts beautifully with its shimmering silver body. Their caudal fin features a distinctive black and white striped pattern, adding to their appeal. These active, peaceful characids are renowned for their incredibly tight schooling behavior, creating a mesmerizing, synchronized display as they move gracefully through your aquarium. Their nose color also serves as a natural indicator of water quality, intensifying when conditions are optimal and fading if stressed.

Care Level

Rummy Nose Tetras are considered an intermediate care level species, well-suited for aquarists with some experience. They are very peaceful and thrive when kept in groups of 8 to 10 or more, enhancing their natural schooling behavior. Ideal tank mates include other peaceful, similarly sized community fish such as other tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid large or aggressive tank mates that might intimidate these timid fish.

Tank Essentials

A minimum tank size of 75-80 litres is recommended for a small school of Rummy Nose Tetras, with larger, longer tanks (90 cm minimum length) preferred for bigger groups to allow ample swimming space. They flourish in a well-planted environment with driftwood and leaf litter to mimic their natural blackwater habitats. Maintain stable water parameters: pH range of 5.5-7.5 and temperature between 24-28°C. They are sensitive to sudden changes and high nitrates, so consistent water quality is crucial.

Diet

Rummy Nose Tetras are omnivorous and will eagerly accept a varied diet. Offer high-quality flake or micro-pellet foods as a staple, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. A diverse diet is essential to promote their vibrant coloration and overall health. Feed small portions multiple times a day.
