Formula One, often abbreviated as F1, is the highest class of international single-seater auto racing open to the world and sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). It is widely considered the pinnacle of motorsport.
A Formula One season comprises a series of races known as Grands Prix, held in various countries and continents on both dedicated circuits and closed public roads. The sport has a rich history, with its inaugural season dating back to 1950. For the 2026 season, the calendar is set to include 24 races across five continents.
Key aspects of Formula One include:
* **Drivers and Teams:** Formula One is a team sport where teams design and build their own cars, each with its unique history and approach, all striving to be the fastest. Notable teams include Scuderia Ferrari and BWT Alpine. As of the 2026 season, Lando Norris is the reigning Drivers’ Champion, and McLaren-Mercedes is the reigning Constructors’ Champion.
* **Cars:** The “formula” in Formula One refers to a set of complex rules that all participant cars must adhere to.
* **Scoring:** A points system is used in Grands Prix to determine the annual World Championships for both drivers and constructors.
* **Super Licence:** Drivers must possess a valid Super Licence, the highest racing licence issued by the FIA, to compete.
