Overview

The Sharpnose Wrasse, also known as the Possum Wrasse, is a small, secretive fish native to the Indo-Pacific. Typically reddish-brown with distinctive yellow bands behind the eyes and on the caudal peduncle, it sports unique ocelli on its dorsal and anal fins. These wrasses inhabit caves and crevices, spending much of their time exploring and foraging. They are shy by nature and may hide frequently, especially when newly introduced or if housed with boisterous tank mates.

Care Level

While sometimes listed as beginner, this species is generally considered intermediate due to its shy nature and specific dietary needs. They are peaceful but can be outcompeted or harassed by more aggressive fish. It’s crucial to provide a stable environment with plenty of hiding places to ensure their well-being.

Tank Essentials

A minimum of 24 gallons (approx. 90 litres) is recommended for a single Sharpnose Wrasse. A mature aquarium with abundant live rock, caves, and crevices is essential. They appreciate subdued lighting initially and a secure lid, as they are known jumpers.

Diet

As carnivores and microfauna hunters, they thrive on a varied diet of high-quality frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped marine meats. Live foods and a refugium or sump to cultivate copepods and amphipods are highly beneficial.
