Overview

The Elegance Coral (*Catalaphyllia jardinei*) is a striking large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its long, anemone-like tentacles and vibrant colors, which can include fluorescent green, blue, purple, and lime green, often with contrasting tentacle tips. This coral has a unique, meandering skeletal base and its polyps extend significantly during the day, retracting at night. While beautiful, they can be semi-aggressive and possess stinging capabilities, requiring ample space from other corals.

Care Level

Moderate. While once considered easy, modern Australian-sourced Elegance Corals are hardier. They require stable water parameters and are sensitive to sudden changes. They are not recommended for beginner reef keepers due to their specific needs and potential health issues like Elegance Coral Syndrome (ECS).

Tank Essentials

A minimum tank size of 114 litres (30 gallons) is recommended. Maintain stable water parameters: pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and low to moderate nitrates and phosphates. They prefer low to moderate, indirect water flow and moderate lighting (PAR 50-150). Place directly on a sand bed, away from sharp rockwork.

Diet

Elegance Corals are photosynthetic but benefit greatly from supplemental feeding. Offer small, meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, or specialized coral foods 1-2 times per week.
