Blue Spotted Puffer: Your Engaging Reef Companion!
Bring vibrant personality and unique charm to your marine aquarium with the captivating Blue Spotted Puffer. Its striking coloration and inquisitive nature make it a fascinating addition.
Overview
The Blue Spotted Puffer (*Canthigaster solandri*) displays a beautiful dark orange to brownish body adorned with numerous white to blue-green spots and intricate blue lines radiating from its eyes. Like other tobies, it’s a smaller puffer with a charming, quirky swimming style, often observed exploring rockwork. Known for its engaging personality, this species offers endless visual interest in your home aquarium. It can “puff” slightly when stressed, so gentle handling is crucial.
Care Level
This species is considered a moderate to intermediate care level fish, best suited for informed aquarists. While generally peaceful, individual Blue Spotted Puffers may nip at the fins of long-finned tank mates or target invertebrates like crabs and snails. They can be territorial towards their own kind, so keep only one per aquarium unless keeping a proven male-female pair in a very large tank.
Tank Essentials
A minimum of 200 litres (55 gallons) is recommended, though larger tanks around 400 litres (105 gallons) are ideal to provide ample swimming and grazing space. Maintain stable water conditions: pH 8.1-8.4 and a temperature range of 22-27°C. Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat and encourage security.
Diet
The Blue Spotted Puffer is an omnivore with a tendency to graze on algae. Its continuously growing teeth require hard-shelled foods such as fresh clams, mussels, and hard-shelled shrimp to keep them worn down. Supplement with a varied diet of meaty frozen foods like mysis shrimp, krill, squid, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, along with spirulina or marine algae. Feed small amounts frequently, two to three times per day.
