Bluespotted Wrasse: A Dazzling Jewel for Expert Aquarists
Unveil the vibrant allure of the Bluespotted Wrasse, a magnificent marine gem boasting iridescent blue spots and dynamic behaviour, perfect for the dedicated aquarist.
Overview
The Bluespotted Wrasse (*Anampses caeruleopunctatus*) is a striking species, showcasing significant colour variations from juvenile to adult. Females typically exhibit a reddish-brown body adorned with rows of iridescent blue dots, while terminal phase males develop an olive-brown to blue-green body with distinct blue vertical lines on each scale and intricate facial markings. These active fish are a visual spectacle, constantly exploring their environment and darting amongst rockwork.
Care Level
This species is considered difficult to expert-level care, best suited for experienced marine aquarists. Generally peaceful, they can show aggression towards conspecifics or similar-looking wrasses, so careful tank mate selection is crucial. They are reef-safe with caution, as they may nip at small invertebrates and clams.
Tank Essentials
A very large aquarium of at least 1000 litres is recommended to accommodate their maximum size and active nature. A deep sand bed of 5-10 cm is essential, as this species burrows into the substrate for sleep or when stressed. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity 1.020-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, and temperature 24-29 °C.
Diet
As carnivores, Bluespotted Wrasses require a varied diet. In the wild, they consume zooplankton, small crustaceans, and worms. In captivity, offer a mix of high-quality frozen foods like mysis shrimp, krill, and chopped shellfish. They may initially require live foods such as enriched brine shrimp or black worms to encourage feeding. Feed multiple times daily.
