Giant Caribbean Sea Anemone: A Striking Reef Centerpiece
Add the magnificent Giant Caribbean Sea Anemone to your established marine aquarium. This vibrant invertebrate boasts flowing tentacles and captivating colours, promising a dynamic focal point for experienced aquarists.
Overview
The Giant Caribbean Sea Anemone (*Condylactis gigantea*), also known as the Condy Anemone or Pink-tipped Anemone, displays a columnar body with numerous long, tapering tentacles. These tentacles come in a spectacular array of colours, including shades of white, pink, purple, green, orange, or tan, often with brightly coloured tips. While primarily sessile, attaching its base to rock or sand, this anemone can slowly move across your substrate using its pedal disc, exploring its environment.
Care Level
Considered an intermediate to moderately difficult species to care for, the Giant Caribbean Sea Anemone requires a mature and stable marine aquarium. It possesses stinging nematocysts and exhibits a semi-aggressive temperament, capable of harming other corals and invertebrates. Careful placement is essential in a reef environment to prevent damage to tank mates.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 190 litres (50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its potential size and mobility, with larger tanks preferred. This species thrives under strong, direct lighting, crucial for its photosynthetic algae. Moderate water flow and a sandy substrate or live rock for attachment are also vital for its well-being. Ensure your aquarium is well-established, ideally for at least four to six months, before introducing this anemone.
Diet
While gaining nutrients from its symbiotic zooxanthellae (through photosynthesis), the Condy Anemone is also a carnivorous feeder. Supplement its diet regularly (every few days to once a week) with meaty foods such as finely shredded fish, mussels, or shrimp.
