Smith’s Blenny: A Captivating & Hardy Reef Dweller
Add character to your marine aquarium with the unique Smith’s Blenny. These intelligent fish offer fascinating behaviours and striking looks, perfect for the dedicated aquarist.
Overview
The Smith’s Blenny (*Meiacanthus smithi*), also known as the Disco Blenny, features an elongated body with a base color ranging from whitish to pale blue, accentuated by a prominent black stripe extending from the eye, along the dorsal fin, and into the caudal fin. Unlike many blennies, they actively hover in the water column before darting into rockwork for refuge or foraging. They possess venomous fangs for defense, a mild sting to humans akin to a bee sting, but this deters larger predators.
Care Level
Considered a moderate care species, Smith’s Blennies are generally hardy and peaceful, making them suitable for intermediate aquarists. They are typically semi-aggressive towards similar-shaped fish and are best kept as a single specimen unless in a very spacious aquarium. They are reef-safe, coexisting well with most corals and invertebrates, though caution is advised with very small crustaceans.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 115 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended for a healthy Smith’s Blenny. Provide ample live rock with crevices for hiding and exploring. Maintain stable water parameters with a pH range of 8.1-8.4 and temperatures between 22-28°C. A tight-fitting lid is crucial as these blennies are known to jump.
Diet
As omnivores with a carnivorous preference, Smith’s Blennies thrive on a varied diet. Offer high-quality marine flakes and pellets, along with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped meaty fare. They will also graze on microfauna within your live rock.
