Description
Lobophyllia Coral: A Vibrant Brain for Your Reef Aquarium
Introduce a stunning centerpiece to your marine tank with the captivating Lobophyllia coral. Known for its rich colors and unique brain-like formations, it offers a dynamic display.
Overview
Lobophyllia corals, often called Lobed Brain or Lobo corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals showcasing striking fleshy polyps that conceal their robust calcareous skeletons. They feature a distinctive brain-like appearance with high, rounded ridges and deep valleys, and come in a dazzling array of vibrant colors including reds, greens, oranges, and purples. During the day, their polyps expand, creating a soft, flowing texture. At night, they may extend mesenteric filaments or sweeper tentacles, which are used for feeding and defense against neighboring corals.
Care Level
Considered moderately challenging, Lobophyllia corals are suitable for both intermediate and experienced aquarists. They are semi-aggressive, employing hidden aggression with mesenteric filaments at night, so ensure ample space (4-6 inches) between them and other corals. Proper spacing is crucial for a harmonious reef environment and their long-term health.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 115 litres is recommended for Lobophyllia coral. Maintain stable water parameters: pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 24-28°C, and a specific gravity of 1.023-1.026. Moderate, indirect water flow and moderate lighting (100-200 PAR) are essential for their health and vibrant coloration.
Diet
Lobophyllia corals are photosynthetic, benefiting from their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. However, they are also carnivorous and thrive with supplemental target feeding 2-3 times per week. Offer meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized coral foods, ideally after the lights dim.
