Description
Toothed Conch: A Sandy Substrate Specialist
Discover the unique Tridentarius dentatus, a fascinating sea snail perfect for established marine aquariums.
Overview
The Toothed Conch, *Tridentarius dentatus*, is a benthic marine gastropod known for its distinctive shell, often featuring a white or cream base with brown spiral bands and a trident-like structure at the siphonal canal. These snails inhabit shallow marine environments, preferring sandy or rubbly substrates in lagoons and on seaward reefs. They are active grazers, spending their time sifting through the substrate for microalgae and detritus, playing a vital role in keeping the aquarium bed clean.
Care Level
Easy. The Toothed Conch is a hardy invertebrate, well-suited for beginners. They are peaceful and generally compatible with most marine aquarium inhabitants, though care should be taken with aggressive tank mates or large hermit crabs that might view them as a potential shell source.
Tank Essentials
A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended, providing ample space for their substrate-dwelling lifestyle. They thrive in stable marine conditions with a pH range of 8.1–8.4 and a temperature of 24–28°C. A deep sand bed is essential, as they will often bury themselves for protection and to forage.
Diet
Primarily herbivorous, the Toothed Conch grazes on microalgae, film algae, diatoms, and detritus found in the substrate. Ensure your tank has a mature sand bed with sufficient organic material; supplemental feeding with dried seaweed or algae wafers may be necessary if algae growth is sparse.
