White Ribbon Eel: Graceful Moray for Your Marine Aquarium
Add an enchanting White Ribbon Eel to your aquarium! Known for their unique, serpentine appearance and peaceful demeanor towards larger tankmates, these captivating morays are a striking addition for experienced aquarists.
Overview
The White Ribbon Eel (*Pseudechidna brummeri*) is a slender, elegant moray eel, typically white to light brown with distinctive black speckles on its head and face. Its continuous dorsal fin runs the length of its body, giving it a ribbon-like appearance. These eels are naturally cryptic, spending much of their day hidden within rockwork or buried in sandy substrates, emerging primarily at night or when hungry to hunt.
Care Level
The White Ribbon Eel is considered an intermediate care level species. While generally peaceful with tankmates too large to be consumed, they can be semi-aggressive towards smaller fish and ornamental crustaceans. They do not typically coexist well with other eels, including conspecifics. A secure, tightly fitted lid is essential to prevent escapes, as they are expert escape artists.
Tank Essentials
A minimum of 280 litres (approximately 75 gallons) is recommended for a single White Ribbon Eel, providing ample space and multiple hiding spots within live rock formations or PVC piping. Maintain stable marine conditions with a pH range of 8.0-8.5, and a temperature of 22-28°C. Adequate water flow and filtration are also vital for a healthy aquarium fish.
Diet
As carnivores, White Ribbon Eels primarily feed on crustaceans and small fish in their natural habitat. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet of frozen meaty foods like krill, shrimp, squid, silversides, and pieces of fresh fish, often offered via a feeding stick. Initial feeding can be challenging, and they may require live ghost shrimp to entice them to eat.
