Tailspot Blenny: A Peaceful Reef Gem
Add a splash of personality to your saltwater aquarium with the charming Tailspot Blenny. These active, inquisitive fish are renowned for their distinctive markings and engaging behavior.
Overview
The Tailspot Blenny (*Ecsenius stigmatura*) is a small, elongated fish showcasing a lovely coppery-brown to orange body, often with a grey-blue head. Its most striking feature is the prominent black spot at the base of its caudal fin, complemented by a yellow iris and a yellow line below the eye. This blenny spends its time perching on live rock and gracefully darting between crevices, adding dynamic natural movement to your display.
Care Level
Considered a beginner-friendly species, the Tailspot Blenny is generally peaceful with other fish, making it an excellent addition to a community tank. However, it can be territorial towards other blennies or similarly shaped fish, so it’s best to keep only one per aquarium unless you have a very large system. Ensure tankmates are docile to prevent issues.
Tank Essentials
A minimum aquarium size of 60 litres is recommended for a single Tailspot Blenny, providing ample space for exploration and grazing. Maintain stable water parameters with a pH range of 8.1-8.4 and temperatures between 23-27°C. Provide plenty of live rock with hiding spots and a secure lid, as these blennies are known jumpers.
Diet
Primarily herbivorous, the Tailspot Blenny thrives on a diet rich in marine algae. Supplement their grazing with high-quality vegetable flakes, pellets, and sheets of nori. They may also consume small frozen meaty foods like mysis shrimp. Consistent feeding is crucial to prevent them from picking at corals.
