Overview

The Canarytop Wrasse (*Halichoeres leucoxanthus*) is easily recognized by its striking bright yellow upper body sharply contrasting with a pristine white belly. As juveniles, they are often entirely yellow, developing their distinctive bipartite coloration as they mature. These active fish constantly patrol your aquascape, meticulously searching for food, and will quickly burrow into the sand bed for rest or when feeling startled.

Care Level

Considered of moderate care, the Canarytop Wrasse is generally peaceful but can exhibit territoriality towards similar-looking wrasses or smaller, comparable fish if not adequately fed or housed in a sufficiently sized aquarium. They are considered reef-safe with caution, as they will consume nuisance pests but may also target desirable small invertebrates.

Tank Essentials

A minimum of 200 litres is recommended for a single Canarytop Wrasse, with a fine sand bed at least 7 cm deep for burrowing. A tight-fitting lid is essential as these wrasses are known jumpers. Maintain stable water parameters: temperature between 22-28°C and pH 8.1-8.4.

Diet

These carnivorous wrasses are active micro-predators. Offer a varied diet of high-quality meaty frozen foods such as Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. They will also readily accept marine pellets and flakes. The Canarytop Wrasse is excellent for controlling pest flatworms and pyramid snails.
